Novato, CA –November 30, 2011 – SPG Solar, Inc. has been selected as a finalist in the Platts Global Energy Awards, an annual program recognizing exemplary industry leadership. The 2011 finalists, selected from more than 200 nominations, were announced by Platts, the leading global provider of energy, petrochemicals and metals information.

Established in 1999 and often described as “the Oscars” of the energy industry, Platts Global Energy Awards highlight corporate and individual innovation, leadership and superior performance in 19 categories spanning the entire energy complex. SPG Solar Floatovoltaics® has been selected for the Sustainable Technology Innovation of the Year category.

SPG Solar Floatovoltaics®makes it possible for commercial, industrial and government users with little available rooftop or land space to float solar on water, providing triple benefits: energy savings, water savings and environmental benefits. Using proven and cost effective floating technology, fresh water irrigation ponds, lakes, or reservoirs become revenue-generating, power producing platforms.

The awards event will be preceded in the morning of December 1 with an associated event, Platts Global Energy Outlook Forum, which features roundtable discussions from debates from executives, government officials and industry leaders on “The World’s Quest for Clean Energy.”

SPG Solar – a leading national solar energy company – designed, engineered and constructed the 620kW system that spans two rooftops and five solar carports, using Kyocera KD 235-watt solar panels. Perpetual Energy Systems financed the system through a Power Purchase Agreement under which PLNU will purchase the electricity produced at a predetermined rate over 20 years.  

Concurrent to the PV system’s construction was the installation of a 54 kW solar water heating system by Adroit Solar, an integrator of solar thermal systems. The system will provide an estimated 940 gallons of hot water a day to the student dorms and save the university $5,000 annually on utility bills. The project was financed by the Student Green Fund, a $5 semester fee initiated by students to provide funding for sustainability efforts on campus.

The two projects, which include more than 2,600 Kyocera solar panels, are expected to produce over 917,000 kilowatt-hours annually and provide a savings of up to $1.6 million over the next two decades.
