The Challenge

After nearly 10 years of searching for a sustainable energy solution, Point Loma Nazarene University chose SPG Solar, Inc., to deliver a solar solution that was as intelligently designed and innovative as it was cost-effective.

The Solution

SPG Solar installed a 357 kW system, targeting four campus buildings with optimal conditions for solar. Each solar system offsets the ”peak” energy usage of the respective building, replacing the highest cost electricity from SDG&E with less expensive solar power.

SPG Solar, Inc., worked closely with the university staff to ensure PLNU’s renewable energy goals were achieved and their solar project was installed with minimal impact on campus activities. SPG Solar collaborated with PLNU on all levels from energy management and system design to financing, installation, and operation. The project was strongly influenced by PLNU students, who as part of a class project, participated in the RFP process and teamed up with the sustainability department, PLNU administration and facilities managers.

Noteworthy Achievements

The Financial Benefits

The key element that enabled PLNU to go solar as cost-effectively as possible was the Power Purchase Agreement that SPG Solar proposed, which allowed PLNU to go solar with no initial outlay of capital. Instead, the university entered into an agreement with Solar Power Partners (SPP), which owns, operates, and manages the solar system. Under the terms of the agreement, PLNU purchases the electricity generated by the solar system from SPP over the next 20 years.

PLNU, a selective liberal arts university located in San Diego, Calif., is not only seeing the financial and environmental benefits of going solar, but is also incorporating their solar experience into their renewable energy curriculum and social outreach programs.

The Green Line

With its solar installation, PLNU has become a community leader in sustainable energy and an exemplary source of information for other schools on the effectiveness of solar energy solutions.
