The City of Tucson has taken advantage of its solar rich resource and emerged as a solar leader. In partnership with SPG Solar, the city is benefiting from lower energy costs, green jobs, environmental stewardship, and clean renewable energy with cash positive revenues for 25+ years.
A long term partnership with SPG Solar, which initiated in 2009, with 1 megawatt DC of solar installed across the City of Tucson covering both rooftops and a ground mount solar tracking system. SPG Solar was selected again to engineer and install an additional 2.3 megawatts of solar power, spanning another seven sites in downtown Tucson, including the Tucson Convention Center, which was completed in 2012.
Power generated at each site will offset on average the equivalent of 55% of the electricity used at each location. The systems will all be monitored by SPG Solar’s monitoring software, eSunSpot®.
“This largest City solar project was made possible with low-interest Clean Renewable Energy Bonds, Tucson Electric Power’s renewable energy credits and made easy by SPG Solar’s experience and range of solar power services,”Doug Crockett, City of Tucson Energy Manager
Solar Power Generation
The solar tracking system produces over 5.7 million kilowatt hours (kWh) yearly, equivalent to powering 519 average American homes annually and providing energy during peak hours of the day, when electricity loads and prices are at their highest.
- Lower operating costs
- Over 70 local green jobs generated during time of construction
- Two University of Arizona internships
- Offsets 4,448 tons of carbon dioxide annually
- Equivalent to removing 841 cars from our congested roads yearly
