$8 Million
savings over 20 years

Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) is committed to the highest quality learning experience for the more than 27,000 students in the district. As schools continue to face budget cuts, IUSD wanted to take a proactive approach to save money and hedge against rising electricity costs. Solar was the right solution for IUSD to reduce energy costs and set a hands on example for students.

Rooftop solar power systems spanning 14 schools. Through SPG Solar’s technical design and quality construction, the systems will provide an equivalent of up to 35% of each campus’ electrical needs. Additionally, SPG Solar arranged the financial solution by partnering with a third party for the provision of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to ensure no upfront capital costs were required by IUSD. IUSD will realize an expected $8 million in savings over the 20 year term of the PPA.

This portfolio of solar energy system is one of the largest solar deployments for a public school system in California. On top of the immediate savings to the school, new solar lessons were incorporated into the curriculum, providing students an opportunity to learn about solar and monitor the production.

“It was through the extraordinary partnership with SPG Solar that we will be able to reduce our energy costs by millions of dollars and shrink our overall carbon footprint. At the same time, we are providing a hands on learning experience for the students”Gwen Gross

Solar Power Generation

The solar tracking system produces over 2.3 million kilowatt hours (kWh) yearly, equivalent to powering 214 average American homes annually and providing energy during peak hours of the day, when electricity loads and prices are at their highest.

  • Lower operating costs at the campus
  • Solar lessons incorporated in the curriculum
  • Added up to 90 green jobs during construction
  • Offsets 1,789 tons of carbon dioxide annually
  • Equivalent to removing 324 cars from our congested roads yearly
